My First Date with Utrecht!

First of all, i would like to thank the UES committee for providing me with the UES scholarship without which, i would not have been able to be a part of this wonderful University. I am currently pursuing a Prestige Master's degree in Cancer Genomics and Developmental Biology. It is truly a great experience to work in one of the best labs in Europe as the experience of research here has far surpassed my expectations and it's at an international level. The research i have taken up for my major research project is on toxicity of drug treatment against cancer. It encompasses research topics in various fields of life sciences giving me a broader perspective of the concept. I personally believe that with this opportunity, i can effectively contribute to this field of research.

Secondly, i would like to use this opportunity to share my first experience here in Utrecht:

Bright Sunshine, Crowded Railway stations, Jam-packed Buses, Smiling faces and of course, the smell of cheese:

This was how Utrecht welcomed me on the 1st of September. But, I hardly noticed the uniqueness of Utrecht that evening... yes, i arrived in the evening and was late to collect the keys to my room or at least, i thought i was late... Being late gave me an opportunity to experience one of the most unique rides of a lifetime: the taxi ride from the centraal station to the Uithof cost me quite a lot for such a short distance but he made the distance in under 5 minutes (Now thats quite a ride). Ran into the SSH office praying to God that i was not late, or else i had to sleep in a hotel or a hostel, something which i was in no condition to experience after such a hectic day. Inside the office, the lady at the desk smiled at me the moment i stormed in. The office was still open! I was under the opinion that everything in the Netherlands is closed after 6 pm on Saturdays. But in the back of my head, i had a premonition that i would be spending the night in my cosy room... And it turned out to be true!!!

The Prelude:
As i mentioned before, i was late and had a hectic day... I was coming to Utrecht from Rotterdam, where i spent my first 10 days in the Netherlands. I set off with plenty of time to reach Utrecht, but then, i realized that all the money i had was in the form of traveler's cheques which i knew not at that time, how to en cash the same... Time suddenly seemed so finite to me at that moment. Amalgamating my senses, i brought myself a sense of immense drive and did what i had to do and ended up being late and TIRED.

The Evening:
Relieved after i moved into my room, i set out back into the city with my flat-mate George (he had some experience and the local know-how of the city as he had arrived a month before). This time, i preferred a nice and diligent bus ride... Now i had an ample of time to look around and enjoy the beauty of Utrecht. But unfortunately, we had to part our ways as George had some shopping to do and i had to see off my cousin who had accompanied me all the way. After a refreshing walk (to my senses) in the Hoog Catherijne, i payed attention to my groveling stomach. Since i was very unaware of the vegetarian cuisine here, i ended up in a very costly Indian restaurant.

In the end, i had a very costly experience but truly a nice one. Something like a date with a typically Indian girl! (who usually empties your pockets on every date) Well, it was an important lesson that i learnt on that day: Financial ethics of spending as a student.
