Many people don't realize the fact that the vast majority of bands you could possibly be interested in ride through Utrecht at one point or another. I just went to see Broken Social Scene and they were absolutely fantastic. Utrecht is truly a Hub of activity, and whenever I'm looking for something more international and crazy I pay 4 euros for a train to Amsterdam. Meanwhile I made the jump and bought a used fold-up bike for 80 euro--not cheap but not all that expensive, either, if you think of the amount of freedom it gives you in the Dutch transportation system, and how much you need a bike for visitors anyway. (So I recommend a fold-up bike =p).
Today the Storm Masters program I work with snagged a location for its twice-monthly documentary night.
Finally, it's understandable that people get wrapped up in their studies, and then when they get some free time they spend it with friends or on relaxing, and then they need some money so they spend time on a job if they can get one. Reading new things takes a back seat, and understandably so. But I do recommend Kierekgaard's Concept of Irony. (it's short!)
